Cowboy Day!

Today was the Western Day and as part of the festivities they had a stick horse rodeo. We decided it was the perfect excuse to get all cowboy'ed up! The kids all rode in the rodeo and it was so perfectly enjoyable for us to watch. It's amazing how an experience like this can really showcase each personality!

Ayvri's age group went first and although I didn't know if she even knew how to ride the stick horse, she very calmly wandered through the arena as independently as can be. She was so darling in her rumpled pink hat and didn't really know why we were all cheering for her. She wasn't shy about giving a high five to the rodeo clown either! Most of the kids her age cried when they got into the arena, but not her - I guess she's just used to being the center of attention! She also refused to wear her boots this morning, for some reason demanding to wear her tennis shoes instead . . . exerting her own will in areas of fashion already!

Kabe was up next. You can see he insisted on wearing his beaten to death hat and got a lot of comments on it. When it was his turn he tore out of the arena and even after the horn blew he was still just plowing around (see video). He knew he was big stuff and really enjoyed it. He also won a belt buckle (3rd place) and was so pleased when he went in to get it, brought it to me and said, "Mom, what's this for?" I guess we're not as cowboy as I think. After I told him what it was he said, "We'll just have to buy me a belt then!" What a handsome little guy.

Ksenya started agonizing over whether or not she wanted to ride the second we got there. Finally she decided she did, but you could see the anxiety all over her face. She got into the arena (holding Dad's hand) and then threw her stick horse aside and stood there. Daddy had to help her get across to the exit gate and she was really embarrassed. Still, I was proud of her that she made it through the gate and didn't burst into tears . . . this really is progress.

It was a fun day and probably the last little family outing we'll have for a few weeks so I was glad that we went. Again, today was a reminder that we're small town people and we missed the good old down home celebrations we were raised with. And I have to say it . . . is my husband not the MOST HANDSOME cowboy of all time? Sorry, the hat just makes me swoon.

So did you get a belt for Kabryn?? That is so funny. Right in your element with all the cowboy goings-on. I loved the video footage. I bet you were wishing they had a category for 9-month-pregnant ladies, so you could bring on labor:)
