Out of This World!

The Cub Scouts leaders decided we would invite all the Activity Day girls to do a Space Derby.  We are talking 40 kids racing their rockets.  This was a tricky one because none of us (parents and leaders) had EVER done a space derby before.  It ended up being one of my favorite scout events ever.
Here are my cute racers and their amazingly creative rockets!

Tyler helped run the races and did a great job of getting everyone into the starting places.

He also helped me and another leader to string balloons across the whole ceiling of the gym - it looked so great and didn't take all that long.  When Brigham saw it done he said, "wow mom!  That looks great! I bet it cost a lot huh?!"  I made the mistake of saying, "actually it was just $5 worth of balloons."  Now he wants to do it for every activity.

The rockets were so creative and actually quite a bit of fun to build.

In all it was a great even that I hope to repeat each year (if I can talk them into it!).  Scouts can be so much fun!

5 Miles

Kabe has been working in scouting and only had a few requirements left.  One of those was to hike for 5 miles using a compass and a map.  Well, he picked out his route and we got on our cold weather clothes and we headed out.  We let the kids decide if they wanted to come and Ayvri was the only other child who wanted to go (she has a hiker spirit).
Off we went.  I didn't realize how completely out of shape I've gotten until we hit about mile 3.  Kabe and Ayvri were great sports though and we got to see some interesting and beautiful country.  We chose a pretty easy trail (it is winter after all, and the Mama hasn't been working out).  We also didn't want to get lost so we picked a pretty well marked area - not realizing that we'd be hiking through people's backyards.

Still it was a lot of fun to just spend that much time talking with them while we hiked.  Another requirement down and the boy is one step further down the scouting path.  See?  The scouting program blesses boys AND their out-of-breath mothers.

We Heart Scouts

It has taken a bit but I can honestly say I love scouting.  Kabe has had THE BEST leaders and has made so much progress.  It totally gives him a feeling of confidence and accomplishment and he's learning good things as well.  I love this group of boys and he and Danny have been working together on almost everything.  I love that they can ride their bikes to scouts and that he has taken so much initiative on his projects.
