HELP!!!

All right people - we've hit a major crisis in our lives, my camera is dead. gone. no more.

So - here's what I need you to do. Please please please (whether you've already told me or not) comment on this post and give me your camera 411. I want essays here people, type your hearts out. Tell me about what you have, what you want, what your neighbor has and all the why's and how you feel about it. I know lots of people like the Cannon Rebel but Cannon also makes a different camera with more megapixels for less money, so why is the Rebel so popular?

I'll be honest, I shoot in Auto . . . I haven't shot manual in years because I'm LAZY and I'm usually in a hurry. So - I don't necessarily need a lot of manual features.

Please let me know, this problem has to be remedied soon (oh - and if you have an extra money tree growing nearby that would help too) :)

I have the Rebel and LOVE it!!! I also have learned how to use a lot of the manual features though, which are fun and because I have a lot of extra time. If you just want a point and click I am sure that ANY Cannon or Nikkon would work great! I also have a point and click Kodak which I have had for years, and you can see the difference (check out my posts Claire and Constance (Kodak) and Popcorn (Cannon)) just depends on what you want to do with it and the ease of using it. My Kodak is by far more convenient, but the Rebel takes by FAR better pictures.

Are you looking for a point and shoot or a dslr? I'll give you my take on both. :)

DSLR: We have the Nikon D60 (my BIL also uses this for his professional shoots, you can check out his blog, it's got a button on my blog on the right, Chase Walker Photography). It's great in Auto. I've never really used many other of the functions. It takes fantastic pictures, and was pretty reasonable. The new model has a flip down screen display, which Cade thinks is cool. It was a reasonable price at Costco, that's the place we found it cheapest.

Point & shoot: My favorite camera ever was a Panasonic Lumix. It's great, affordable (under $200), and was so easy to use. I miss it a lot, but I'm getting used to my Nikon Coolpix, which I also enjoy. The Lumix is awesome, and my FIL bought my MIL a great point and shoot that takes fantastic pics.

Those are my choices! :) I haven't had many other experiences with others.

I have a five year old Fuji FinePix something or other. I love it, but seriously doubt you could find one today. It still works great!

Good luck with your camera hunt, and if you find that money tree, please let me know, or at least snag some for me!!

I have a Canon powershot s5Is I love it because it takes great pictures and has a super zoom for a point and shoot. It has manual focus if you are feeling adventurous as well as some black and white/ creative color settings as well. The only problem I have had has been back focusing but I think that mine does it because I have hauled it all over in this Texas sun and it has taken a good beating. Canon's work great and are very compatible with pc's and macs.

i'm a big giant fan of Nikons. We started out with a coolpix and picked it up for a mere 125 it was a simple point and click which is convenient enough but I got frustrated trying to take my sweet little abby's picture..she could never wait for the flash..so this past Christmas we got a screamin' deal on a Nikon D60. My friend got a Nikon D40 for a little less and loves her just as much but for me it's so worth the extra moola to go for DSLR.. Start doing your research you'll probably want to get both and you really should but I'm a big giant fan of Nikon! Go test drive camera's wherever and however you can that way you know what you're comfortable with.
Oh and I found a money tree..only problem is it's here in Tooele and just a little sapling..I think the grasshoppers are going to eat it so you better come here quick to pick some money...Ok so it's late I'm a little loopey.

I did alot of shopping before I bought the camera that we got....we ended up getting a Nikon D200. We were really thinking about the rebel but I looked up alot of reviews on the cannon Rebel and they were not as good as all of the reviews for nikon...alot of the complaints were that the photos were not as clear...I also have a freind that owns the Rebel and she was a bit dissapointed with it...contemplating taking it back. Because of the photo quality. We love our Nikon D200 it is the earlier version of the Nikon D300 and it is pretty good priced...besides for me I can learn more about photograpy with it and take some really fun photos. It has been great...I am still learing how to take better photos indoors especially in our house that has horible light. But it is a great camera. The D60 through D90 are pretty good too. My unkle has the D60 and it takes pretty good photos from what I have seen. Some of the action photos end up a bit blurry but not to bad....
as far as point and shoot cameras that have really reviews I will look those up again and will send yo another post. :D good luck!!

Toni,

I am also shopping around and in the research I've done, I'm going with Nikon. I have a friend who is a photography major and he has both a cannon and a Nikon. He let me shoot with both and try them out. I agree with his assessment: Nikon has a much more logical user interface, with the options right by your shooting hand. It's just a lot easier to manage and makes for faster shooting to capture split second moments... Which you might be looking for with fast moving children. Let me know how it goes.

Love your guts,

Robby J

I just went through this recently. I studied like crazy, because I do not love the quality of the point and shoot cameras I have used, but do not want to invest the time and effort into a DSLR. I ended up researching like crazy. I know everyone thinks Cannon and Nikon are the only cameras out there but we ended up with an Olympus. We have live view which I wanted and it is great with the auto point and shoot for quick shots. I think of it as driving a Toyota or Honda. Yes Cannon and Nikon are well respected, but you can get a whole lot more features for less if you go with the Kia! That's the amature take.
