Fishin'

This was the first official week of our home school program. The verdict? So far so good! This weeks' unit was all about fishing and fish and we had so much fun! Here are just a few things that we did together. This activity was a sensory and critical thinking activity. We talked about different ways to catch fish and what if we didn't have a pole? I put them in the bathtub in their bvd's and gave them each a half-bar of soap and told them it was their fish. They had to see how many times they could catch it. Note to self, if you ever want to do this put goggles on them, splashing wildly for fish in soapy water is hard on the eyes!
This was fish anatomy. We talked about scales and after our snack (pistachios) they had to use tweezers to glue the scales (shells) onto the fish. They thought it was fun using the tweezers and glue and it was a fun lesson in recycling also.
After a little field trip to the Bass Pro shops to examine a fish habitat (they have an incredible indoor aquarium) they came home and built their own habitats in water bottles. The trip to the "fish store" was so much fun they just ran around classifying and labeling all the fish there and they were so busy studying the fish I didn't have to ask them to "not touch" anything while we were there (amazing for us!).

Stay tuned next week for Lightning and Thunder!

Did you go to Bass Pro to watch them feed the fish? My kids love that! And it's a little lesson on the cycle of life cause they feed them smaller fish - it's Wednesdays at 12:30pm. I think they are also doing lots of other workshops.
